Civic Reflections at City Hall brought together citizens from diverse sectors of the Valparaiso, Indiana community, to reflect on what it means to be a Valparaisian. The group included participants born and raised in "Valpo" along with very recent arrivals, each bringing different experiences, positive and negative, of living in their town. The group met once a month, from January through June, 2008, to discuss short readings that provoked questions like these: - How do we meet or work together as neighbors?
- How do we connect across race and other differences?
- How do we create change?
- How do we encourage unity?
The program's goal was to open a public conversation about what is important, not just what is urgent, allowing residents to explore their own and others' hopes, values and aspirations for their community.
